Exporting from Premiere Pro sounds simple until you open the export window and see about forty different settings staring back at you. Bitrate? Codec? VBR 1 pass vs 2 pass? Target bitrate vs maximum bitrate? If you've ever just guessed and hoped for the best, this guide is going to help.
I'm going to walk you through exactly what settings to use for YouTube in 2025, why they work, and how to save them as a preset so you never have to think about it again.
Before touching the export window, make sure your sequence settings match your footage. If you shot in 1080p at 30fps, your sequence should be 1080p at 30fps. Mismatched settings can cause quality issues even with perfect export settings.
Go to Sequence > Sequence Settings and double-check resolution and frame rate.
H.264 - the standard codec for YouTube. Compatible, compresses well, and YouTube handles it smoothly.
Start with Match Source – High Bitrate as your base, then adjust from there.
1920 x 1080 for 1080p content. For 4K use 3840 x 2160.
Match your original footage - 24fps, 30fps, or 60fps.
Bitrate Encoding: VBR, 2 Pass
VBR (Variable Bit Rate) adjusts based on scene complexity. 2 Pass means Premiere analyzes your video twice for better quality.
Target Bitrate: 16 Mbps (for 1080p 30fps) Maximum Bitrate: 20 Mbps (for 1080p 30fps)
For 1080p 60fps: Target: 20 Mbps | Maximum: 25 Mbps
For 4K 30fps: Target: 35 Mbps | Maximum: 45 Mbps
Audio Codec: AAC Sample Rate: 48000 Hz Channels: Stereo Bitrate: 320 kbps
Next time you export, just select this preset and you're done.
Yes. If you export directly from Premiere Pro, it locks up the application. Use Media Encoder (click Queue instead of Export) - it handles the export in the background so you can keep editing.

Export settings genuinely affect how your videos look on YouTube. Taking ten minutes to set this up correctly - and saving a preset - means you'll never have to think about it again.
Use these settings, save the preset, and focus your energy on making great content. The technical side is the easy part once you know what you're doing.
